Founded in 1868 as "polytechnic school", Technische Universität München is now a high-tech university with approximately 20,000 students and a focus on natural sciences, engineering, medicine, and the life sciences. In 2006, it was announced to be one of three German universities of excellence funded by the German government. The computer science department hosts 21 chairs/research units, and is consistently ranked among the top three computer science departments in Germany.
